While many travelers want to custom-design their own safari or have a ready-made group of people to travel with, others prefer to join a small group on a scheduled safari. These safaris have the advantage that enjoy the company of a group of like-minded travelers for the whole trip, forming bonds with new people and sharing an adventure that is often the basis for lasting friendships. In addition, your guide travels with you for the duration of the safari and quickly learns where his group's special interests lie.
Accommodation types and transportation will vary depending on the style of the safari. In southern Africa, we primarily recommend the scheduled safaris offered by Wilderness Safaris and Robin Pope Safaris. Wilderness offers two levels of Explorations: "Adventurer" Series Safaris and "Discoverer" Series Safaris. Robin Pope Safaris specializes in walking safaris in Zambia's S. Luangwa National park. Most programs combine stays in their lovely riverfront permanent camps with nights in more rustic bush camps.
The style and essence of Wilderness' Adventurer Safaris take you back to the bygone days of Africa's exploration. Spacious (3m x 3m) dome tents, complete with mini-verandas, allow guests to feel more connected to nature. Pure cotton linen bedrolls (with duvets), sturdy camp cots, bedside tables with silver lantern and mini luggage benches add to the atmosphere. Shared separate toilet and shower 'bathrooms' with old-style tin bucket showers and basins create simple serviced comfort. Hurricane lanterns and lively campfires accentuate the feeling of the wild and untamed.
On a Discoverer Safari, guests experience the same nostalgic, turn-of-the-century camping atmosphere but in yet greater comfort. Wilderness Safaris' newly designed, spacious walk-in hexagonal meru-style tents create a sense of connectedness to the Earth and nature, enhancing the view and the feeling of the wild and the untamed. Flowing linen of heavy, pure cottons, brass bucket showers and basins, separate flushing toilets and shower areas all add to the atmosphere, while luxury comforts and amenities are available, including a bush laundry service.
In East Africa, most scheduled programs combine lodge stays with a few nights of mobile camping but some are purely lodge-based. The mobile camping can be fairly simple, similar to the adventurer series above or very luxurious depending on your preference.
