Victoria Falls
The Victoria Falls is one of the most impressive works of nature on the African continent.
The mighty Zambezi River plunges into a massive ravine to create a wall of sound and a permanent spray which sustains a unique rain forest.
Best views of the gorges are obtained between July and December, when water levels are lowest, but the most powerful and spectacular scenes are between January and June, when the force of the waters are at their peak.
Rare birds such as the taita falcon, rock pratincole and collared palm thrush occur in the area.
Upstream is the Zambezi National Park - home to elephant, giraffe and others.
The town of Victoria Falls attracts visitors from all corners of the world and provides a base for a variety of adventure activities including white water rafting in the turbulent rapids below the Falls, canoeing, kayaking, microlighting and even bungi jumping.
The more sedentary visitor will enjoy the casino at Elephant Hills Hotel and shopping in the craft village.
We recommend the following accommodation options in and around Victoria Falls:
|
Ilala Lodge
A medium sized comfortable lodge in the town center - easy walking distance from the entrance to the falls, the crafts market and local shopping.
Ilala has two restaurants and a small club.
|
Victoria Falls Hotel
One of Africa's most famous old-style colonial hotels which has recently completed an extensive renovation and expansion.
First class accommodations, service and beautiful grounds.
|
Victoria Falls Safari Lodge
Located slightly outside the town center, this lodge has expansive views over the rolling hills of the national park.
There is a waterhole that attracts some animals and the general decor gives more of a safari - feel than do the in-town hotels.
