Accommodation
Wine Country SafarisTM offer only the finest accommodation
available in each region visited.
Botswana
In
Botswana, the safari features Wilderness Safaris' luxury camps:
Mombo and King's Pool. Wilderness Safaris' aim is to create a balance
between comfort and atmosphere. Most camps are tented and all are
small and comfortable without being opulent. Emphasis is on friendly
service, good food, and excellent guiding. The tents are large and
airy with wonderful views, full ensuite bathrooms, hotel amenities
such as soaps and lotions and small decorative touches that make
them feel welcoming and homey. Lighting is low-voltage solar lamps.
Mombo
Mombo is a secret paradise for those truly interested in wildlife.
Huge concentrations of animals, including all of the large predators
and the rare and endangered wild dog, occur in this remote and isolated
wilderness region. Because of its great wildlife, several award-winning
documentaries have been filmed at Mombo. Accommodation is in eight
large tented rooms. The dining area, lounge and pub are on a raised
teak deck under thatch overlooking the flood plain. The camp offers
a plunge pool for relaxing during the heat of the day. Game drives
by open vehicle and on foot. The camp is being completely rebuilt
in late 1999 and when the new camp is opened it will truly offer
the best of everything in Botswana.
King's Pool
King's Pool Camp is located in the Linyanti Private Game Reserve
midway between Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta. Accommodation
consists of 10 luxury tented rooms with en suite tiled bathroom
facilities. The main lounge, bar and dining room under thatch with
a view over King's Pool Lagoon. Game drives are by land (day and
night), on foot and by water. The game is prolific with large herds
of elephant and buffalo as well as lion, leopard, cheetah, wild
dog, roan, sable, and much more. The birding is excellent.
Zimbabwe
For
the Zimbabwe stop, we use the impressive Victoria Falls Hotel. This
famous hotel, which recently completed an extensive renovation and
expansion, maintains its colonial elegance and charm. Spacious public
areas are decorated with old prints and photographs, animal tropies
and handsome potted palms. The main dining room requires that patrons
dress for dinner and tea is served in the afternoon. Conveniently
located about a 10 minute walk from the Falls, the Victoria Falls
National Park and the center of town, the hotel is set in lovely
grounds overlooking one of the main gorges below the Falls.
South Africa
In South Africa, safari accommodation is at Singita Lodge in the
Singita Reserve bordering Kruger National Park and at Phinda Lodge
in the heart of Zululand, one of Africa's most ecologically diverse
regions. Both lodges offer world class accommodation, award winning
food and wine and excellent game viewing.
Singita Reserve
Singita Reserve, situated on a 35,000 acres adjacent to Kruger National
Park, is in an area famous for the "Big Five" (lion, leopard, rhino,
buffalo and elephant) and is home to many other species. The luxurious
Boulders Lodge has accommodations for 18 guest plus a private gymnasium.
Each suite, built into the landscape on a cliff's edge, has a private
bathroom, an outdoor shower alcove, private swimming pool, lounge
deck, airconditioning and an open log fire. Ebony Lodge, more colonial
in style, also has 9 beautifully appointed suites. Singita's innovative
cuisine and impressive wine cellar have earned it membership in
the prestigious Relais & Chateaux group; one of only two game reserves
to have received that honor.
Phinda Reserve
Phinda
Reserve is located in Zululand between the Ubombo Mountains and
the Indian Ocean and close to the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park.
Phinda Forest Lodge offers 16 glass-walled suites raised on stilts
under a canopy of torchwood trees. It was hand built by local Zulu
to minimize the impact on the rare Sand Forest, one of seven different
ecosystems in Phinda. Lion, cheetah, giraffe, zebra, rhino, elephant
and wildebeest are among the many species found in the area. Game
drives, walks and a river excursion are included; scuba diving in
the Indian Ocean is an optional extra. The food is gourmet and the
atmosphere luxurious.
